It is the important festival of Tamil people.Lord Muruga did Sura samhara on this day. It starts from Amavasa(Diwali day and after sixth day (shashti) we celebrate Skantha shashti .Shashti is the favourite day of Muruga. TheShashti Vritam begins on October 22nd and ends on October 27th. The day after SkandaShashti is celebrated as Devasena Kalyanam. Devotees keep fasting and prayers on this day.If you fast on this day every month you will blessed with a child(those who pray for a child) In Thiruchendur people gather to have dharsan of lord muruga.Thousands of people take kavadi and palkudam on this day to fullfill their prayers.

We clean the house, buy new clothes and fireworks. Make different types of sweets and snacks. Exchange greetings and sweets each other.Light earthern lamps and pray, do Lakshmi puja.Early morning get up , take oil bath and eat the diwali marunthu.Start to burst crackers .Then eat breakfast with sweets. Invite dear and near ones to our house.

Everyone forgets and forgives the wrongs done by others. There is an air of freedom, festivity and friendliness everywhere. This festival brings about unity. It instils charity in the hearts of people. . Employers, too, purchase new clothes for their employees.
